As and after students are developing their understanding and capacity to explain counting items by ones to at least 20, they begin to investigate numbers as parts and as wholes, including focusing on 10 as an important number in our number system.
Students investigate part-whole combinations for all individual whole numbers to 10 using joining and separating to explain related combinations.
