Children investigate seeing division in 2 ways – as ‘___ equal groups’ and as ‘groups of ___’. If students can only see division in 1 way, it is likely as ‘groups of ___’.
From Year 3 onwards, when children divide by whole numbers, seeing division as ‘___ equal groups’, allows them to develop their understanding of the relationship between division and fractions (dividing by 2 is the same as halving). Seeing division as ‘groups of ___’ allows children to divide by fractions.
