MD 26 FD 27 – DIVISION IS MULTIPLICATION BY A FRACTION
Children have been recording division as find a fraction ‘of’ since Year 3, explaining the meaning of the denominator as telling us what number we divided by.
They now combine this understanding with their understanding that multiplying by a number greater than 1, makes a number a number of times larger, extending it to develop understanding that multiplying by a number smaller than 1, that is a fraction, makes a number a number of times smaller.
