MD 16 PA 18 – MULTIPLY AND DIVIDE BY 8

Children investigate multiplication and division by 8 efficiently using properties and relationships. These properties and relationships include the distributive property to multiply by ‘distributing’ the multiplication over addition, and the relationship between division and fractions. This is efficient because the distributive property works in all multiplicative situations.
Children also investigate strategies that are less efficient because they do not work in all multiplicative situations.
NB1: Focus learning on multiplying and dividing by 8 up to 10 times 8, then move onto multiplying and dividing by 7 rather than extending to multiplying and dividing larger numbers by 8. After students have investigated multiplying and dividing all single-digit numbers up to 10 times the numbers, they may investigate multiplying and dividing larger numbers by single-digit numbers.
NB2: Patterns and Algebra 18 is the Distributive Property, which is embedded into Multiplication and Division 10 , 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 – as such there are no separate Teaching Resources.
