FD 9 – ROLE OF THE NUMERATOR AS THE NUMBER OF PARTS WE ARE CONCERNED WITH
Prior to Year 3, children have only record unit fractions using the fraction symbol – fractions with 1 as the numerator. For example, if they had more than 1 quarter, the recorded as 2 quarters, 3 quarters, etc.
In Year 3, they begin to investigate non-unit fractions – fractions with numbers other than one as the numerator.
Children investigate the meaning of the numerator, identifying that it tells us the number of parts that we are concerned with.
This concept is linked to fractions on a number line – integrated Fractions and Decimals 10.
