FD 21 MD 23 – DIVIDE REMAINDERS TO CREATE FRACTIONS + ALGORITHM
In Years 3 and 4, children record remainders in division as remainders. In Year 5, they begin to investigate dividing the remainder as well, creating a fraction. This is related the meaning of the vinculum, and the multiplicative meaning of the numerator – integrated Fractions and Decimals 20.
We have included algorithms in this Level and in Level 24.
Algorithms are simply procedures that may be followed without understanding. Because of this, algorithms are easy. Children who demonstrate understanding of multiplying and dividing using properties and relationships won’t benefit from being taught an algorithm.
Children whose understanding of the distributive property and the relationship between division and fractions is limited, and children whose understanding of place value is limited to standard place value, or to 10s and 1s, may benefit from being taught the algorithms to allow them to calculate with larger numbers.
