As children develop their number sense (conservation of number – that a number always represents the same amount), they begin to develop their capacity to subitise – instantly recognise the number in a small collection without counting.
A small collection may be up to 5 or 6 depending on the arrangement of items.
Children can then subitise larger collections by mentally partitioning them into 2 smaller collection, for example, partitioning 7 into a group of 3 and a group of 4.
