ECG 5 – CONSERVATION OF NUMBER

As children begin to count items with one-to-one correspondence , they develop number sense, that a number always represents the same amount, by counting the same number of different items.
They also explain that the last number said tells us the amount or total. Asking children, ‘How many are there?’, after they complete a count, allows you to identify the level of their understanding. If they need to recount, their number sense understanding is still developing.
